It was late evening and the amulets dangled noisily from the stainless steel chain around the witch doctor’s neck, as he bent over to choose the suckling pig that was to be sacrificed on his birthday.

He never took that chain off, as each amulet contained a malevolent spirit that he had captured, preferring to keep them closely supervised.

This was what he loved doing the most, and the thrill during the exorcism, the excitement as he negotiated and persuaded the ghosts, and the powerful feeling as he forced his will on them was intoxicating.

But such possessions were rare in these modern times, and all he did now was bless the crops and heal the sick, and while this paid the bills, playing with the spirits was what made him feel alive.

And this was something he desired to feel this night, on the eve of his 80th birthday.

He longed to tame the spirit of time.

But he had to make the proper preparations for his feast first, tedious as it was.

And so he supervised the setting up of the altar, making sure the bamboo and paper flowers were were structured in proper layers, and he placed the sharpened cleaver that would be used to slaughter the pig and the chicken, on a golden tray.
